We've discussed trees and their importance to the existence of the people on this planet but we've yet to touch on the creatures that rely on trees for their home, shelter, safety and life. Every time a tree is cut down it leaves behind a bird without a home and kills any number of chicks and eggs that were in the nests.
According to BirdLife International we are currently in extinction mode for many species of birds and a number of well-known species are at risk. In the last 5 years 40% of the 11,000 species of bird are in decline. This is huge news and we are not talking about it because most people don't even know why they are important, as if this living sentient being has to prove it's importance to exist...but I digress.
Birds are an important part of the health and well-being of this planet because they keep things in balance. They pollinate plants, they disperse seeds, they clean the earth of dead carcasses and they recycle nutrients back into the soil. Remember how I told you way back that Gaia has created anything that could ever be needed to keep this planet and everything on it happy, healthy and running smoothly?
I don't know about you but I love the fact that birds eat bugs! I think this is quite necessary and well worth it to take care of the birds and keep them safe from extinction. By doing this it prevents the bugs from over taking everything on the face of the planet. Birds are the number one healthiest way to keep the bug population down without chemicals. Imagine that, Gaia has her own weapon against bugs and they don't kill anything but their target.
Birds are also natural seed dispensers because they eat and expel the seeds as waste. They along with other species are here to make sure that trees are continuously being planted so that we can be assured of air, water and the other good things that keep us alive. According to allaboutbirds.org birds in the tropical forests disperse up to 92% of all trees and woody species and this includes edible and medicinal plants. Think about that figure...92%, now do you see how special they are? The loss of even one species of bird could mean the extinction of a food or medicine. Remember everything is a wheel in the cog of the balance of this planet.
A 40% decline of bird species in such a short period of 5 years is quite shocking and alarming. These bits and pieces of nature are bits and pieces of the earth herself. They are important every single one of them. We have a responsibility to this planet to take care of her and that includes all of the creatures that live here. It's a matter of survival!
