Next we come to another very much maligned and misunderstood but quite necessary creature that belongs to Gaia. Once the birds settle down for the night out come the bats. They are Gaia'a flying bug catchers and some bats eat more than 70% of their body weight in bugs every night and when the female bats are pregnant they eat up to 100% of their body weight in bugs. According to www.batswithoutborders.org this is the equivalent of a single small bat eating 1000 mosquito sized bugs per hour. Let me say this again, 1000 BUGS PER HOUR! Think about this, if one small bat can eat that many mosquito's and other bugs per hour what would we do without them? With Zika, Malaria, Dengue, West Nile, Yellow Fever, etc., etc, etc., how is it that people have become so incredibly afraid of these flying protectors?

Probably hundreds of years of stories of Vampires that turn into bats, but seriously people, it's time to get educated! Bats are mammals, they have live births and they are so afraid of people that they will literally leave their babies to get away from them. The fact is that there ARE three species of blood eating bats and they live in Latin American. They do not drain anything of blood though and cause no harm to the birds and other mammals that they feed off of. Another fear of bats is rabies but in reality only 0.5% of bats, that is less than 1%, of bats catch rabies which is actually lower than other mammals.

So, now that we have that out of the way lets get back to the other reasons that bats are necessary to the health of this planet. With their proclivity for eating bugs they actually help the farmers clear their fields of harmful bugs without chemicals. Some bats eat the nectar of flowers and help to pollinate plants. It has been recorded that 1/3 of the worlds food crops depend on pollination by bats, birds and insects. Bats are a spoke in the wheel of life and very important for the health of this planet. Gaia knows how to take care of herself and its up to people to get out of the way and let her do it.
